Spend a summer on the water by becoming a Seasonal Sailing Instructorsailing 3

Essex Outdoors Bradwell are looking for individuals with boundless energy and enthusiasm to become part of the 2019 seasonal Sailing team.

Our Instructors have a real passion for the great outdoors and for offering high levels of customer service to a range of clients varying from year three school children through to children and adults with special needs. You may even find yourself teaching other adults on qualification courses.

As a Seasonal Sailing Instructor you will be delivering both a range of sailing in a range of different craft as well as various land based outdoor activities. From Problem Solving and Archery through to Sailing our new Dufour Drakkar 24's and our range of single and double hander dinghies, there is plenty to keep you entertained. We aim to train our Seasonal Sailing Instructors in as many different activities as possible; a bonus for us as you can cover a greater range of activities but also a plus for you, as you get a much broader level of experience.

This role will require you to hold an in date RYA dinghy instructor qualification, but please remember that you don’t need any previous experience to get on-board with Essex Outdoors at our other centres as a Multi Activity Instructor. We are looking for fun and engaging people that love working with children and in the outdoors. We'll provide an intensive programme of training to give you with the skills that will be needed to ensure that both you and our customers have a great experience.

If you come to work for us, you’ll be part of the strong tradition of outdoor education provision which we’ve been delivering to children, young people and adults for over 40 years. During that time we’ve trained many people just like you to run activities from canoeing and climbing through to mountain biking and sailing, with many members of our seasonal teams going on to have successful careers within the outdoor industry, teaching and youth work.

Overview of the job

Essex Outdoors operates from four centres around the county however this role is only available at our sailing centre.

Bradwell - This is Essex Outdoors coastal sailing and powerboat centre. Based on the River Blackwater we operate a variety of sailing and powerboats for both fun activity sessions and professional qualification courses. The centre also runs a variety of exciting land based activities making the best use of the surrounding countryside.
This centre also offers a residential package for it's seasonal staff.

Key responsibilities

Amongst others your main responsibilities will be to run activity sessions in a safe and fun way for our customers both on and off the water. While there will be an expectation for you occasionally to ‘muck in’ with any part of the business if it is needed, we are employing you to be a Sailing and Activity Instructor and that’s what we want you to do and be good at.

Training and qualifications

For this role you will require the relevant RYA sailing instructor qualifications before employment, however Essex Outdoors will also provide you with all the additional training you will need to be a productive and valued member of our team. We do not expect all of our applicants to have prior experience in all areas, just a commitment and enthusiasm to working well with children in all outdoor conditions.

Training will start with a two or three day residential stay at one of our centres to undertake core training. This will cover basics such as first aid, safeguarding and disability awareness to mention but a few. Following this each centre runs its own training programme. This will teach you how to run effective, safe and engaging sessions on a range of different activities and sailing craft.
Our experienced staff will guide you through all you need to know and leave you 100% confident to run activities.

Year-on-year we have staff that come back to work another season with us at Bradwell and when their availability matches ours, they often work out of season as ‘as and when' instructors. We are aware that we cannot commit to long term contracts very often, so we do try to give our staff the opportunity to utilise the facilities when available and to make the most of the qualification courses that we run, often at highly discounted rates. Some of our recent staff have completed VHF SRC, power boat levels and powerboat instructor courses!

For the 2019 season we are offering a flexible fixed term job opportunity; these contracts vary between 4, 6, 8 and 10 months in duration.

Meet Lucy

sailing 2

Lucy joined the Bradwell Seasonal Sailing Team in 2018 and has spoken about her experiences;

''Foremost, the prospect of a summer teaching sailing and being paid to do what I love for a few months, but also the opportunities Essex Outdoors would give me to further my sailing qualifications is what made me apply for the role. [Before Essex Outdoors], I was working in a pub a few days a week during my gap year between college and university.

During my time as a seasonal instructor I have gained my RYA Dinghy Instructor certificate, RYA first aid certificate and RYA Powerboat Level 2; these are all qualifications that mean I can now teach sailing anywhere in the world and have opened up so many opportunities for my future. Besides these, instructing has cemented my love of teaching and working with young people so that I now know the career for me. Living on-site with my colleagues has also been a learning opportunity, learning how to live with others has set me up for university.

I am off to university in September [2018]. Hopefully, I will be returning to do seasonal work with Essex Outdoors at some point in the future.

Every moment has been incredible. Work hard, play hard just about sums it up! Working hard all week and socialising with great people on the weekend has made this summer one i'll never forget"
