Lowland Leader Award - Assessment

This two day course assesses candidates on their ability to lead groups on day walks in lowland countryside and woodland environments.

The assessment is the next step for lowland leaders who have completed training and are ready to achieve the Lowland Leader Award. Candidates will need to demonstrate their ability in leading groups in summer conditions and will be assessed on key skills, such as group management, mapwork, emergency procedures, hazards and more.

On passing the assessment, candidates will receive the Lowland Leader Award certification.

Course detail

The Lowland Leader assessment is two days long with a minimum 16 hours contact time.

Candidates will receive the Lowland Leader Award certification on passing the assessment. This certification allows candidates to demonstrate they have gained technical competence for leading day walks in lowland countryside and woodland in summer conditions.

What you need to bring:

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Suitable outdoor clothing
  • Walking boots (no trainers)
  • Comfortable casual clothing
  • Gloves and warm hat
  • Day sack liner (bin bag)
  • Water bottle/vacuum flask
  • Small first aid kit
  • Notebook and pencil
  • Gaiters
  • Head torch
  • Toiletries
  • Compass and whistle
  • Waterproof map case
  • 1:25000 scale OS Maps specific to the location of the assessment
  • Completed Mountain Training Dlog
  • Sleeping bag
  • Anything else you feel will assist you

Pre-requisites

The following must be fulfilled prior to registering for the LLA assessment:

  • You must have attended a Lowland Leader training course (or have been granted exemption)
  • You must be familiar with the syllabus
  • You must have logged a minimum of 20 walks in lowland countryside in different types of terrain (woodland, coastal, farmland, etc.)
  • You must hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 16 hours and relevant to your work as a Lowland Leader

A satisfactorily completed Dlog is an essential pre-assessment requirement for successful completion of your LLA assessment
